Lineage

There is concern about authenticity among western practitioners... I suppose it's reasonable.  You don't want to invest your time, your heart in something that has not withstood the test of time.  But sometimes the recitations of certifications, teachers and pedigree do seem anxious or competitive or otherwise missing the point.  I guess this is my less-than-patient commentary...

The tradition of red seal or chop marking paper paintings in Asia is very old.  An artist would stamp one, two or three:  one with their name, a second could name their studio, and a third might be a short poetic phrase to enhance the meaning of the painting.  If purchased, the collector would add their stamp and if a painting passed through many hands it might accumulate quite a few...  This would usually only happen with famous or historically important works.  So the additional stamps, rather than obscuring the original work, are testiment to it's special value (even to those who cannot see it for themselves).
